Implementation of the Natural Capital Protocol in Mexico

In 2019, we participated in the implementation pilot of the Natural Capital Protocol that was carried out for the first time in Mexico, as part of the Biodiversity and Business Alliance (AMEBIN) activities, to which Banorte belongs. With the support of GIZ, Reforestamos México and PwC in the application of the methodology, we focused the study on the climate risks quantification in the tourism sector, with the collaboration of one of our best clients. The results were presented this year to the Credit, Business and Risks team that promoted this project in the bank, reaffirming the relevance that environmental aspects have in the financial sector decision-making.

Womens International Day

In commemoration of the International Women's Day and as part of our Diversity strategy, Banorte organized several panels that aimed to highlight gender equality as one of our key cultural drivers.
Some of the speakers present were: Marcos Ramirez, Grupo Financiero Banorte’s CEO, who addressed issues such as the relevance of women in charge of businesses, and Blanca Treviño, Softtek´s president and CEO, who addressed issues such as the challenges and opportunities of the leading woman in Mexico and the world.

Financial Inclusion Workshop in the Autonomus University of Zacatecas

As a financial institution, we are committed to creating a healthy financial culture in our communities. For this reason, our volunteers taught a workshop titled “family finances” in the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, to more than 80 students.

Wind Race

Carrera del Viento is a sustainability movement in favor of education that took place in one of the largest parks in Mexico, the Parque Eólica el Mezquite.

It is the first athletic competition held in a park where clean energy is being generated for more than 100,000 homes in the northeast of the country. The race was certified by the Council of Responsible Sports and approximately 600 runners attended.

Second release of Red-tailed Eagles

In collaboration with the sustainable wildlife conservation center “Reino Animal”, the second pair of Red Tail Eagles (Buteo Jamaicensis) were released in February 13 in commemoration of National Day of the Golden Eagle. Banorte provided the tracking equipment that both species carry.

2019 Mentoring Program

We created an internal mentoring program in which directors and deputy directors share experiences, transmit knowledge, and give and receive advice on topics related to their professional and personal needs and aspirations to their mentees. Besides that, the mentees had 3 management skills workshops: executive image, and context of gender equality in the corporate world.

Annual toy collection “Jugando Jugando”

For the 6th consecutive year, the annual collection of gifts was held, where Banorte employees nationwide donated 9,725 toys to 108 various community centers and NGOs.
When delivering the toys to the institutions, Banorte volunteers organized various social activities in order to share a day of recreational activities.

Regional PRI event in Latin America

As part of our commitments with the Principles of Responsible Investment (PRI), we participate as one of the main sponsors of the 2nd regional PRI event in Latin America, an event attended by more than 120 people. Being pioneers and leaders of the initiative, Banorte had the honor of opening the event by ringing the bell for the market opening of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) of that day.

Social and environmental risks in infrastructure projects

As part of the annual training program for the Business Areas, we gave an 8-hour conference/workshop on social and environmental risks in infrastructure projects. The event was teached by Mr. Luis Montañez, an expert on environmental impact and a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment, highlighting the participation of Sustainability Champions and directors from Credit, Risk, Banking, Infrastructure and Specialized Areas.

Banorte and the banks belonging to the Association of Banks of Mexico, in conjunction with the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Service Users, carried out the National Financial Education Week; where, through dynamic games, workshops and conferences, raised awareness about importance of financial culture.

The experience consisted of taking a tour like the one you take at a museum. The visitors (employees) were able to learn, through visual resources, the 2030 Agenda and the practices we carried out in Banorte regarding the Sustainable Development Goals.

Reforestation in Sierra de Lobo and Cumbres National Park

During the month of September, 2 reforestations were carried out where more than 290 volunteers participated: the first in the Sierra de Lobos, located in Guanajuato and the second in the Cumbres National Park, located in Nuevo León. As a result, a total of 3.5 hectares were planted with 2,800 trees.

Reforestation in Nevado de Toluca

During the month of September, we carried out a reforestation where 184 volunteers reforested 2 hectares with more than 1,600 trees.

Reforestation Bosque de la Primavera, Guadalajara

On July 6, 110 volunteers located in Guadalajara went to Bosque de la Primavera for a day of reforestation, where they covered 1.5 hectares with 1,080 trees planted.

Festival of Flowers and Gardens (FYJA)

Since we are commited to our community and environment, some flowers used in the Festival of Flowers and Garden were destined to university projects for investigation purposes, the ferns were donated to Fundacion Hogares for the creation of a green neighborhood garden located in Lomas de Cuilotepec in Tlalpan , Mexico City, where residents and volunteers of the bank participated under the supervision the Foundation´s supervision.

Relase of Red-tailed Hawks

In collaboration with Reino Animal, a sustainable flora and fauna conservation center, we have released two specimens of Red-tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis) at Sierra de Patlachique , a Protected Natural Area with the purpose of adapting the species to its natural habitat after being rescued by the PROFEPA from the illegal traffic of animal.

In the program Banorte Adopts a Community (BAC), our volunteers help to rehabilitate the houses of a colony of the CDMX that were damaged by the earthquakes of 2017.
